staying in santa cruz for spring break. the folks are coming up to visit, hah.
saw explosions in the sky tonight. they were decent live, but it'd help if they were more diverse in their song writing. they had a keyboard on stage, but they never used it during the show, and refused to play an encore, claiming they were too tired. lame.

10:59 pm - i'm fucked
thursday night, while wandering between bars with some friends, we passed by my old store, Noah's Bagels, and was compelled to throw my keys at the window as hard as possible. this was, of course, the best idea I've ever had, until, the next morning (after waking up in a house at noon in a house I'd never been to before, but that's a different, boring story,) I realized that my automatic door opener wouldn't work, and further, the car wouldn't start. being in the genius haze of a hangover, I figure the battery is dead, so I call my friend, and we try to jump the car with my cables. this fails, and after having the old man down the street voluntarily come over and give me his analysis (it's all fucking electric), I call triple A. they tow me to Lloyd's Tires where I had some work done before, and after a few tests, the mechanic concluded that because he could not hear the fuel being injected into the gas tank, that I would have to have a new fuel pump installed.

today, I'm fucking grotesquely sick (after a whole quarter of completely neglecting my health and somehow getting away with it), they call me up, tell me the fuel pump is in, and that the car still wont start. But, they're 99% sure that because I also broke apart the plastic part of the actual, metal car key, I must have lost the electronic transponder hidden inside that allows the car to start (and for the dash to stop flashing "theft.") So, I call my parents to get them to send me the alternate key, they go ape-shit, wont help pay for the costly new fuel pump (which of course may lead to all sorts of new problems), and now I've got maybe one-hundred scrills to my name, no job, a piece of shit, earth-destroying, gas-consuming ugly-bastard of a car that I told my parents I wanted to get rid of over spring break anyway (to which they responded, when we all thought the fuel pump was to blame, that this is just how cars work, you've got to put in some money, etc,) and, probably worse, further reason for my parents to continue thinking I'm a fuck-up (which they've made no attempt to conceal,) leading me to believe that should they find out I failed (well, took a "no pass," slightly better) yet another course, my so recently blogged about predictions of spending more time in the ol' schoolhouse may soon, quickly, and quite violently collapse. (wow that's the best sentence ever written)

i'm so fucked

4:46 pm - i'm not a racist
disclaimers should always be a red flag.

i'm getting really into 20th C lit and language theory. all this subject/object crap i've been hearing about is sort of actually becoming relevant and not just pretentious chatter. I(subject) I(verb) you(object). more importantly, I I me. however, theory is pretty much destroying my ability to write creatively in any formally decent fashion.

a recent poemCollapse )

saturday i'm seeing pinback and mc chris. strangest coupling ever? probably not.

i am quickly becoming a foosball master. so we accidentally crushed both of the balls, leaving us with just the foos.

since monday i've watched: the godfather, the godfather part two, gangs of new york, barry lyndon. needless to say i haven't been in the most academic mood. staying up all night for no reason tuesday night kind of made me crazy. haha just kidding--you all know i've been crazy all along.

i'm so happy the days are getting longer.

9:19 pm - booo
resolution to not smoke teh ganja: 100% success so far. we'll see if i make it to 4-20 (ultimate goal)
resolution to not be an alcoholic: ehhh. haha. it hasn't kept me from schoolwork so that's good. i still am completely devoid of passion and, generally, cares about anything, but sometimes not caring about anything is better than caring too much.
resolution to get more than zero exercise: success, i guess. 've been riding my bike, + not being lazy and eating out. better than i expect of myself.

upcoming concerts:
pinback @ the catalyst in santa cruz. should be decent. it's nice not having to drive extensively to see a somewhat well known band i like.
holy fuck/a place to bury strangers @ bottom of the hill in san francisco. bottom of the hill is an amazing venue. you get there when the doors open and you sit by the front of the stage and you look up at the musicians a foot in front of you and say witty things in between the songs heh. APTBS are awesome in an obvious way, but maybe that's just coming from a person whose favorite band is sonic youth. holy fuck has grown on me, and if there is anything that can be said about bands with two drummers and an ish-load of effects it's that they're going to melt your face off.
black moth super rainbow @ bottom of the hill. i don't know if i cna actually go to this one, it's during finals week. but after watching some live youtubes of them i definitely want to if i can. that dandelion gum album of theirs has so many interesting little sounds. the simple beats, guitars, and synth-flute melodies just go so well together. and the vocoded vocals are so fitting in a unique way.
justice/diplo @ the concourse at the san francisco design center. haven't been here before, but it's indoors and general admission which i suppose are the two central qualifications needed to make a justice show what it ought to be. yes please.

santa cruz symphony is friday... tchaikovsky piano concerto and beethoven's 5th. i'm gonna kick myself if i don't go, but fuck, we'll see if i can convince any of these philistines i call my friends will want to go. god i'm such a bourgeois fuck.

11:50 pm - back to basics
i turned 21 friday. i was 100% sober the entire day =)
went down to carmel/pebble beach/monterrey to relax, explore, take a general mental health day
it was pretty nice but then later i started getting calls from people who had heard it was my b-day, people who hadn't called me in months and decided to pretend to give a shit because it is supposed to be some special occasion. well fuck them.
saturday i went to a party, designated driver. it kind of sucks when its the kind of party where everyone is having the goddamn time of their lives and you're completely miserable, but i guess that's the kind of party you leave early in the night and come pick up your housemates later.

i bought a bike, one year after my old one having been stolen. it's a "dope" (bike shop dude lingo) 14 speed road bike. i picked it up today, and after having not been on a bike for a year was completely destroyed by a pretty short ride. ughh so out of shape. that'll change. like a lot of things. keeping it pretty together my first week sans facebook, haha.

at least we fared better than the one neighbor, a tree didn't fall on house. yeah. this fucking huge bay tree gets blown over in the night. completely blocks the road right after our houses. they've got two holes in their roof, a completely crushed metal shed, and pretty much the entirety of the leafy top part of the tree on their porch.

i hate it when people talk about the virtues of physical labor, but today, chopping wood from the back yard for my fireplace out here in my solitary existence in these polar woods i nearly came to my knees in vulgar joy.

i know i've recommended this album previously in this journal,
i will never cease to be amazed by Grizzly Bear's Yellow House
i calculated it... i've listened to the album in its entirety about 100 times this year

1:28 pm - farewell fall quarter '07
something about fall quarters, coming off all that seemingly endless free time, makes me unmotivated to do any schoolwork. particularly my lit 101 assignments, which are fucking awful because it's all lit theory as opposed to say, actual creative works. so i'll give it another shot next quarter, oh well.

sometimes dance parties with less than ten people are the best kinds (as far as the dancing is concerned). yay musical theater--i really need to see some show sometime. my housemate and i watched the movie version of Rent the other night, at least until the power went out at our cabin. boy that took me back. makes me consider just how far away from la vie boheme i am.

i really want to see No Country For Old Men. come on, Coen Brothers, Cormac McCarthy novel, sheeeez. and also, Control, the Ian Curtis biopic. then i'll come home and stare at my "unknown pleasures" album cover poster and try to induce some sort of seizure.

goin' to see the Thermals tonight in santa cruz. not the craziest awesome band ever, but they put on a fun show. they're one of gavin's favorite bands so we saw them in san francisco last spring or something. how do you measure a year? well, for this year, in concerts. i probably went to at least 20 or so. i really should compile a list of all the concerts i've ever been to.

every morning i wake up and my hands are asleep and they are usually pretty cold all day long. i think i probably have bad circulation or something. i'm falling apart. in the words of barnie gumble, don't cry for me, i'm already dead.

the other night we were sitting in our jacuzzi and a banana slug crawled up and over the side, trying to get down to the moisture and heat. knowing the chemicals in the water would probably fuck it up, we returned it in the ivy tangle. a couple of interesting facts about banana slugs: they have no natural predators. they are hermaphrodites. when they have sex, they have to find partners that are exactly the right size, otherwise their penis can get stuck in their mate and has to be bitten off.

san diego can kiss my sweaty unwiped ass. when i was down for thanksgiving i found a perfect representative of what i'm talking about: a billboard, on the harbor side of rosecrans, somewhere in between the living room and nimitz. it shows two men dressed up in military regalia (one white man and one black man, of course). the caption is, "Good sailors always find a way back home." and below is says, "Naval Reserve". i know what they were probably meaning to say, but goddamn, how could they ignore how obviously insulting the other way of reading it is.

12:11 pm - why homework is fun when you're a creative writing major
The Puzzle

By my account, through ages and longer yet
We children learn to mirror forms devised
By generations past. This sad regret
Of etymology lies as a guise
For trite poetical conservatism.
Atrophy reigns, the quill and pen and keys
Cannot find truth without separatism
From traditional modes. You must well please
your muse and compliment her hallowed tastes.
So break the rules and write the new argot,
A jargon granting genius, one that wastes
No talent. Aim your words for this target,
And rich will be your yield. We must refine,
The last line is never the bottom line.

9:29 pm - hm
i started school. taking Lit-61: Intro to Reading Poetry. it's such a joke. there are a total of 10 people in my class. myself and two others are the only ones who really talk. and one of them hates poetry and is a total dick. it's kind of hilarious. it's kind of nice taking a single class just to get it out of the way. i have plenty of free time now that my dumbshit new general manager at Noah's has cut everyone's hours. she's so awful, in pretty much every respect. we're always out of stock of stuff, this last time, coffee cups. out of both the large and the small. so we stacked two iced tea cups for greater insulation and sold them. i'm pretty sure they have wax coatings and are somewhat unhealthy when exposed to the high temperature of coffee. i really hope she gets fired somehow. oh well.

I just got this "OiNK" bit torrent program and after a long hiatus i have returned to the world of stealing music off the internet.
this is the year I've come to fully enjoy electronic music. additionally; a lot of krautrock and post-rock, several metal albums, jazz, instrumental hip-hop, some idm (haha weirdest music i've ever heard), and a couple of indie albums i've been lacking, notably Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, jesus that album is one in a million.

I'm hopefully going to see the Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem together at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. They're both so awesome, I have a hard time deciding which of the two I like more.

this sunday night/early monday morning is the annual Perseids meteor shower, which also happens to correspond to the new moon, ergo: ideal viewing. I'm going to try to go up to this awesome geological structure in the mountains north of santa cruz called "Moonrocks" to get above the fog layer. i've never seen a meteor shower before.

looking for a house for next year...so aggravating and stressful. more on that as it develops.

otherwise life is completely boring as usual. there are so few people in santa cruz compared to the school year. le sigh. goodnight.

12:18 am - I can't hear anything
ventured again to Fancyland. walked around Lake Merced. got pizza, twice: escape from new york in the haight and fat slice in berkeley. saw Sonic Youth at the Berkeley Community Theater. They performed Daydream Nation in its entirety. sadly, the sound levels were fucked up and I couldn't hear what I was watching the musicians doing. Daydream is definitely a studio album to begin with: all the meticulously arranged noise. they played a double encore of Rather Ripped material, which, being more riff based translated live better. it still rocked, of course, and I bought a Sonic Youth beach towel. yes please.

tonight I saw The Smashing Pumpkins at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. given they only had two original members, and they're a decade and a half past their prime, they were amazing. I've waited seven years to see them, and was more than impressed. they had a pretty sweet setlist, fucking Hummer! a solo acoustic Rocket! Starla! and many others. man that took me back.

right now I'm watching this dvd of Radiohead on Jools Holland. I can't wait to see them...

Summer has been weird. the beaches and hills and mountains and rivers are where it's at man. Santa Cruz is hot, you gotta get out and do it.

school finished. I got an A in poetry writing, a B+ in fiction writing, and a B+ in contemporary american lit. I feel like I tried the least in poetry. weird. I found out today that I'll be one of the 3 editors for the campus lit magazine Chinquapin next year, the one I was published in this year. stoked.

went to san dieger with gerden, rine, and kayder. $.02 Canary played two shows, one at Dr. Techno's and one at Twiggs. the Twiggs was by far the superior. the place was completely sold out with people watching from outside and we didn't completely fuck up? partied ridiculously, goddamn rockstar lifestyle.
